Matt Champness is a CEAT Emerging Leader, and received a scholarship to attend evokeAG 2020.
Matt’s interest in agriculture arises from the challenge Australia and the world now face to sustainably produce more food for a growing population using less land, water, labour and resources.
Having graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with first class Honours from Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, Matt continues to pursue his passion for agriculture. He has spent the last 11 months working as a volunteer weeds agronomist at the Provincial Agriculture department in Savannakhet, Lao PDR, as part of the Australian Volunteers Program, with support from The Crawford Fund and The Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation.
Matt plans to continue working with developing and developed nations to refine food production processes, enhance food security and alleviate poverty. Using scientific approaches, he will assist farmers in growing safe and nutritious food in a sustainable manner. As part of his quest to broaden his knowledge of agri-business, Matt will shortly be taking a self-guided study tour of the Netherlands, Germany and Israel.
While at evokeAG, Matt plans to engage with agri-food leaders to discuss how we can achieve sustainable food security using existing and developing technologies. He is also looking forward to connecting with individuals and organisations from all parts of the food supply chain to build networks for future collaboration.
